How to get your Pennsylvania APRN license

Pennsylvania uses the legal title "CRNP" (Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner) for what most states call NP or APRN. PA is a Restricted Practice state — CRNPs work under a Collaborative Agreement with TWO licensed physicians. Here's what licensure actually requires in 2026, including the unique two-physician collaboration rule, Act 124 opioid CE for prescribers, and what trips CRNPs up.

Practice authorityWhat the two-physician collaboration rule means

Pennsylvania is unique among the pilot states — CRNPs must have a Collaborative Agreement with TWO licensed physicians (most states require only one). The agreement defines the scope of medical conditions the CRNP may diagnose, the medications they may prescribe, supervision requirements, and the practice setting. A physician cannot collaborate with more than TWO CRNPs simultaneously, which limits supply.

Reality check: The two-physician rule + the 2-CRNP-per-physician cap creates real-world bottlenecks. New CRNPs sometimes wait months to secure both physicians. If you're considering relocating to PA, line up the Collaborative Agreement BEFORE accepting a role.
